Tonight is the night to pick the brains of each of the 51 artists participating in this year’s Cock Show at The Atomic Rooster.

From 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., The 2014 Cock Show Vernissage will be taking place at the Rooster. Every year, the pub challenges local artists to produce the most creative tribute to roosters they can possibly make. The result: an exhibition that turns the popular Centretown bar into a shrine of fowls. The challenge attracts artists from all walks of life, including former software engineer, Darcy Whyte.

“I’ve been in this show since the beginning. It’s been a very awesome experience. I’ve been meeting new people every year,” says Whyte.

Whyte’s piece, The Timeless Rooster, is a wood inlay of a rooster. As an added flare, it can tell the time.

“It’s made of hardwoods, walnut, teak, Canadian maple and numerous other woods from all over the world,” he says. “His little eye, which is glowing, can tell the time”

Each colour sequence that shines out of his rooster’s eye corresponds with a different time. For a complete breakdown, you can visit Whyte’s website.

The winner of this year’s Cock Show will have their piece of art featured on The Atomic Rooster’s coasters for the year and will be given a gift card to Wallack’s.

“It’s not even about the prize money,” says participant Sylvia Martin. “It’s all about being selected as the artist to be featured on their coasters for the year!”

The Cock Show will be on display until Oct. 26th.
